Our desire to remain in the fictional space of Stanley Kubrick's 1980 film ‘The Shining,’  after the narrative is over has made it one of the most iterated on film of all times. Shining360 is a continuation of this tradition.

Shining360 is a 30-minute audio-visual work that looks back into the now-iconic film space of Kubrick's ‘The Shining.’ This 360 video enables you to revisit reconstructed scenes from the whole film, and look around them in real-time, while following the original path the camera took. The fragmented and broken digital artifact is reconstructed using photogrammetry, a method for calculating depth from a series of images (or video frames in this case). The black spaces that exist at the edges of the environments as you look around are the result of space that never appeared in the original footage, meaning there was nothing there to reconstruct. It is where imagination filled in the blanks.

Both the audio and visual components of this project are created entirely from the original content of the film The Shining, produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick, 1980.

It can be viewed in VR using the youtube phone app & a google cardboard.

Many thanks to Golan Levin and the Studio for Creative Inquiry for supporting this project. All content derived from Stanley Kubrick's The Shining.
